Race for the Prize.
October 7th, 2008 11:14 AM

In the New Testament Paul, compares life to a race several times.  Maybe Paul was a runner.  There is an analogy there for all of us.  Life is a marathon. We must train and be prepared.  We must endure.

My Son-in-law, Paul is traveling with two runners who are running from San Francisco to New York City to bring awareness to childhood obesity.  Paul is the doctor who attends to the injuries and other heath issues along the way.

The website for the run is here.  You can track the progress of the run here.

My daughter Jennifer, ran a portion of the race with them in Colorado.  She is pictured on the left, above.

From the Greeley Tribune:

The sound of tennis shoes hitting blacktop can, to a runner, sound like a metronome — left, right, tick, tock, a rhythm of efficiency meant to melt away those miles.

But to Greeley native Marshall Ulrich, in the first two weeks of Running America ’08, it sounded like a death march.

He and Charlie Engle were running across America, and they were trying to do it in record time, in 45 days, at nearly 70 miles a day. It sounds brutal, and it was. Ulrich, 57, knew pain. He had climbed Everest. He had done adventure races that lasted almost two weeks. He was a three-time champion of the Badwater, an ultramarathon across Death Valley, maybe the hottest place on earth, that ended on the summit of Mount Whitney, the tallest mountain in the lower 48.

1 Corinthians 9:24

Do you not know that in a race all the runners run, but only one gets the prize? Run in such a way as to get the prize.

Run hard, friends!

I'm an Edmond Chamber Pioneer!

The article was in the October 14th Edmond Sun.  I can't find it online but, read further to find out more about me than you ever wanted to know:

Realtor Has Been Selling Homes In Edmond For 25 Years

Article by

Anna Acebo

Ambassador of the Chamber of Commerce of Edmond

“Treat people like you would want to be treated”.

These are words to live by and standard practice for accomplished realtor, Cynthia Hutcherson-Cunningham, who has been selling homes in Edmond for the past 25 years.

Cynthia resided in Edmond for 18 years before moving to a farm East of Guthrie with her Husband, Bill. The couple has five cherished daughters and ten grandchildren between the two of them. Although Cynthia has her hands full with her real estate career, in her free time she enjoys fishing, farming and tending to her cattle.

In 1969, Cynthia graduated from Harding University in Searcy Arkansas with a degree in piano and social science. While working as a school teacher and giving private piano lessons, Cynthia started her master’s work in Early Childhood Education. Living in Flagstaff Arizona, Cynthia decided to go to real estate school in the neighboring town of Sedona, which changed the path of her life forever. In 1979, Cynthia began selling real estate in Flagstaff, where she continued her career until 1983 before moving to Edmond, Oklahoma. Once in Edmond, the then experienced realtor was recruited by Mo Anderson to work for Century 21, which was later bought out by Merrill Lynch. Later that same year, Cynthia traveled back to Arizona to accept her award as the “1983 Northern Arizona REALTOR of the Year”. Being new in the Edmond market, Cynthia said “she developed her client base by working hard and taking everything that no one else wanted.” Cynthia also joined the  Edmond Chamber of Commerce and became very involved in the Ambassador’s Council.

Through the Chamber, Cynthia was able to meet and talk with other business professionals, which allowed her to gain perspective and draw from the ideas of others.

After only six years in Oklahoma, Cynthia was named the “1989 Edmond REALTOR of the Year.” In 1990 Cynthia made a career move to RE/MAX with Broker/Owner, Ruth Boss, which is where she still works today.

At the height of her career, in 2004, Cynthia was diagnosed with both stage four mantle cell lymphoma and kidney cancer. “My Daughter, Deborah, who was working for me at the time, became my medical advocate. Deborah researched the disease and found a specialist at MD Anderson in Houston Texas, who confirmed my original diagnosis and recommended treatment. My daughter saved my life,” said Hutcherson-Cunningham.

Back in Oklahoma, Cynthia underwent treatment at OU Medical Center. In addition to having weekly chemotherapy treatments for the next year, Cynthia also had her kidney removed. “With the help of my friends, family and lots of prayers, I was able to continue with my business,” said Cynthia.

Now in remission, the successful realtor is back on her feet and is going full speed ahead. Cynthia contributes much of her continued success to her loyal repeat clients, which makes up 90% of her business.

When asked about the declining real estate market, Hutcherson-Cunningham said, “The market is tougher than it has been in the past, but we are very fortunate to be in Edmond – Edmond is the place to be and it’s largely due to the work and leadership of the Chamber. If you think about our quality of life here in Edmond, our schools, our parks, our community…….there is no better place. The Edmond community is small enough that you feel like you can still get involved and actually make a difference.”

Accomplishments include the 1983 Northern Arizona REALTOR of the Year, the 1989 Edmond REALTOR of the Year, the 1990 & 2004 President of the Edmond Board of REALTORS, Leadership Edmond, the RE/MAX Hall of Fame and the Cooperative Spirit Award.

A teary eyed Cynthia said, “I measure the biggest accomplishments in my life by my friends and family. I am so blessed to have so many wonderful people around me and I couldn’t have done it without them.”

Friday is the deadline to register to vote in November's election.  You may think you are registered, but if you have been inactive for the past 8 years, your name has been deleted.

By M. Scott Carter

If you haven't voted in the past eight years, you're history.

You're purged.

You're removed.

And you are no longer on the rolls.

At least until you register again.

You can print the registration and mail it in, but it must be received by this Friday, in order to vote in November.

Check out Rock the Vote to find Oklahoma's online registration form.

What a historical election this will be!  One way or another history will be made, either by electing the first African American President or the First woman Vice-President.

I want to be a part of making history.  How about you?
