Lawn and Garden Advice from a PRO!
April 7th, 2008 9:46 AM

I thought this topic was timely since every time I drive by a lawn and garden store, the parking lot is packed.  Seems like everone has spring gardening one their minds.

I've asked a friend, Richard LeBlanc, who owns Yard and Garden Services. to give some timely gardening tips.  The following is his response:

Here are some situations we've encountered over the past three weeks:

*  Ants, ticks and other unmentionables:  Be on the look-out for ticks this year!  They're already lurking in your garden areas.  While doing garden and flower-bed clean outs, we've encountered droves of those pesky "seed" ticks.  To keep these at a minimum, use a granular type of tick/ant repellent available at garden centers and hardware stores.

*  Now is the time to complete first aid for your ice-damaged rose bushes, shrubs, small trees and bushes.  Time too, for planting new shrubs, bushes and young trees.

*  Check your property for "Curb Appeal".  Look to see if anything is growing into roof overhangs; holly bushes and other types of evergreens can play havoc with your soffits.

*  Look behind your garden beds; anything growing under siding or clap-boards?  Is any type of garden material such as ivy, branches or leaves touching the foudation?  If so, it's time for some garden housekeeping.

*  Garden purchases.  Be cautious of what you buy for your garden beds.  Many items are now available, but it may still be a little bit early to put them in the ground.  While it may be OK to put in shrubs, bushes and trees, it's advisable to "hold-over" other types of flowering plants in your garden shed or garage -- until we're well past the chance of frost.

Thank you so much, Richard and Sue.  I need to check for those darn seed ticks!  Friends, post your specific yard and garden questions here and we will ask Richard to respond.

Much Love,

Cynthia

Here is my question: Is there a solution to the "path" my dogs make in the yard? I placed stepping stones in the pathway to make it look intentional and then they made another path.

We ran into a similar situation once before; here's what our Vet said: *Cut a few "slits" in the privacy fence, so your dog can look out and see what's happening on the other side! He/she may be lonely or curious. *Take the dog to a "dog park" as often as possible. *Get your dog some company; other than buying another one for yourself, have a friend's dog come to spend a day, 2 or 3 times a week.
